A few months ago, my father asked me to go with him to the weekly satsang conducted by the Sri Sathya Sai Baba Centre. Reluctantly, I agreed to go. Having grown up here in Canada, I didn't see much value in singing bhajans; at the same time, however, I knew that I should be practising more bhakti yoga in my life so I went to the weekly satsangs.
Every so often, I would be introduced to some of the elders or the youths at the Centre and one week I was asked if I would like to participate in Swami's birthday celebration. I reluctantly agreed, thinking that I was probably too busy to get involved. After a couple of weeks of working with the other youth boys in preparation for Swami's birthday celebration, I was very impressed by the sincere devotion to Swami that I saw in them. We also had lots of fun working together and I now consider them to be good friends.
Being a newcomer, I had never seen any of Swami's birthday celebrations before. But I did attend and participate in our celebration and I'm glad that I did. At Swami's birthday celebration, I was really able to see the love that the youths have for Swami come across through their performances.
This past Saturday (Dec. 19) some of the elders and youths from the Centre went to Norwood nursing home to sing Christmas carols and distribute gifts to the seniors living there. During out visit, I was greatly impressed by the love and compassion shown by the elders and the youths. It also struck me that we can really make a difference through selfless service.
I am looking forward to the future events in this organization, and to eventually start teaching. If you are a newcomer and are a little hesitant about getting involved, or even if you've been a devotee for a long time and just felt too busy to get involved, I would really encourage you to give some of your time.
